Bro followed, letting the screen door bang close behind him. He shoved his hands in his pockets and followed along next to me. “You have to walk this every day?”
“Not every day. I’ve grabbed a couple of rides from the other students.”
“Leia gave you a ride?”
I laughed. I guess it was pretty obvious the two of us did not get along. “No, not Leia. But Sadie and Clark have when she wasn’t around. The kid from the campground has been really great about giving me rides in the morning. I buy him breakfast and pay for gas and he runs me up on his scooter.”
“You could always take an Uber.”
I snorted. “It would be cheaper to buy a car at how expensive Uber is around here. I guess there just aren’t that many drivers. Honestly with tourism, I thought there would be more.”
I watched his face as lights bounced across his features. He was probably better looking than Collin. And Collin was gorgeous. Bro’s mouth was particularly tempting. Especially when he smiled.
Bro’s hands and arms kept moving as if they were swaying through water. He didn’t leave them hanging at his side. He was always moving, even when everyone was standing around looking at readout displays on the various computers everyone worked on.
“You’re always doing that.” I pointed to the movements. “I’ve seen Collin do it too. Are you channeling the lava or something?”
Bro barked out a laugh. “Channeling lava, as if.” He repeated the actions, only this time he used his full range of motion. He slapped his hands against his thighs a few times, and twisted around incorporating some foot work.
“Oh.” I figured it out. “You’re a kāne dancer like Collin, aren’t you?”
“You know Collin is a dancer?”
I nodded. “Remember, friends with his sister. She took me to a performance once.”
“Well then, you’ve seen me too. We’re in the same dance group.”
I couldn’t remember ever seeing Bro perform, but now that I knew, of course he was a dancer. It was so obvious, he moved like one, and I didn’t just mean the running through a routine in his head part. He had grace, and strength. Now I knew what he could do, I really wanted to see him move. I really wanted to see him in his stage outfit with all his skin exposed. Would he be as captivating as Collin?
“You know, what you said back there, you were technically wrong.”
“About what? Your dancing? Are you walking me back to my cabin so you can scold me?” My words were sharper than my tone. I was mostly teasing him. I appreciated the company, it made the few miles go by faster.
“Collin,” Bro started.
I sucked in a breath. Did he know I was playing compare and contrast with his and Collin’s smiles? Did he know I had images of him in performance garb spinning in my head? I gulped and made a non-committal sound in my throat.
“He is your advisor. All that documentation you brought with you clearly puts you under his academic guidance.”
“So you don’t think I should call him Collin either?”
“Of course you should call him that. It’s his name,” Bro chuckled.
“So what’s your point?” I asked.
“My point is…” Bro stopped walking.
I stopped and turned to face him.
A slow smile tugged at his lips until his teeth gleamed at me. He stepped in close and ran his hand down my arm from shoulder to elbow. His fingers felt like the tickle of a static charge. He held me in place and inched in closer.
A shiver skittered along my spine. My body responded with flutters and tightening of sensitive bits all on its own.
His eyes dropped to my lips. “The point is, Mancey, I’m not your advisor.”
